It’s going to be tough.
Your new home is ready and all that’s left is to move in.
After all the planning, the deliberations, the struggles with the contractor, the endless choices, the clashes with the professionals, it probably seems to you that moving into your dream home is the easy part.
It’s not. It’s exhausting and it takes time and energy.
Here are some tips that will make the transition easier for you, from an architect and interior designer, who has already successfully accompanied many clients to their new homes:
-
Don’t expect everything to be fully finished.
There are always all sorts of little things left unfinished, that you’ll need to take care of later. -
These little things will wear you out.
Professionals don’t like to come to fix all sorts of small problems, so you will probably wait two months for the electrician to come and straighten the socket and for the painters to finish the wall. And you’ll also be running around the city to find the screw that the movers lost. That’s how it is. -
At first nothing works.
You can’t turn on the light in the children’s room, the water faucet is leaking, the door doesn’t lock. That’s how it is. Call on the contractor to fix them, and then go back to the previous paragraph and realize that he won’t come so quickly. -
There are a few things you should not do right away….
For example installing light fixtures, hanging pictures, buying new carpets. These are the things that give warmth and color to your home, and it’s a little strange to be without them, but it’s best to wait until you’re sure of the final location of the furniture before moving forward with them…… -
…. But don’t wait too long
otherwise you’ll get used to the status quo and won’t be able to find enough energy for these finishing touches. -
Take advantage of moving and sort your belongings.
Even if you didn’t have time to do it when you packed your previous apartment, do it now! Don’t put anything in the closet that you don’t really need, because whatever comes in now won’t come out anymore. -
Be forgiving of yourself.
Many of the decisions you made while designing the apartment will suddenly seem puzzling at best, wrong at worst. That’s how it is, always. and remember that you had good reasons for those decisions, even if you have managed to forget them in the meantime. -
Most importantly: don’t forget to have fun!
You’ve dreamed, invested, wanted, and now enjoy, even if not everything is easy and not everything is perfect. -
Professionals have legal responsibilities for their work
Even if things don’t work out right away, they are obligated by law to solve all problems within a limited amount of time. -
Do not hesitate to ask your architect or interior designer to come to the apartment at this stage.
She will be able to answer questions and solve problems that may arise.
I see helping my clients at this stage as part of my job.
