Your living room seems a bit boring and banal to you?

Here are ten tips that can help you upgrade your living room design:

1. Every room – and especially a large one like a living room – will look more spacious and cozy with windows in two directions.

This living room had just one opening. We opened another window to the side, creating a three-dimensional aquarium window, protruding beyond the wall plain into the garden.

This is how we gained:

Another viewpoint to the beautiful garden

A brighter, more attractive living room

Extra depth to the room

A shelf for decorative objects

2. Open the living room to other spaces, such as a study, kitchen, balcony, or garden:

It is customary to open the living room to the kitchen and dining area in one direction, to the garden on the other:

Try other options: Open the living room to other areas, like the study:

or the family room:

In both of these examples, the rooms are separated from the living room by large sliding doors. When they are open they disappear into the wall, thus creating a feeling of one big space.

3. Living room furniture can be used as a means to emphasize the special and beautiful points in the room:

For example – matching the sofa to the windows of this ancient house emphasizes the uniqueness of the windows

Or here – matching all living room furniture, including a custom-built seating bench, to the special windows:

4. Living room furniture does not have to be heavy and massive.

Sometimes it is better to use light or even transparent furniture, which does not take up much volume.

In the picture below – metal and glass furniture was designed especially for displaying decorative objects in a small living room. Notice the transparent glass shelves inside the display case, and the thin metal shelves, which seem to be floating in the air:

Light garden furniture in blue and green is the design theme for the living room in an apartment overlooking the Sea of Galilee. The furniture does not hide the beautiful view, and the colors only emphasize it:

5. Matching sets in the living room are out!

What was taken for granted years ago – matching sets of sofas and armchairs – is now obsolete. In contemporary living room design, it is possible and desirable to mix furniture from different styles and from different materials. This will create a more personal and unique atmosphere.

6. The design of the living room should be personal and unique for you and your family.

Do not hesitate to display collections, personal belongings, books – anything you love and cherich.

In the pictures below you will see a collection of candy containers, a library, a collection of special tin cans, and also a collection of frogs!

7.  Never be afraid to use color!

There are lots of options to play with colors. Choose shades that you like, that bring you joy and make you feel good.

Do not forget – if you are wrong, color is a matter that can always be corrected.

Pillows are a great way to bring color, interest, and life into a living room design! They are an inexpensive, interchangeable, and colorful decorative element. Two examples:

8. When choosing upholstery fabrics for the living room, do not be afraid to mix patterns:

9. It is possible to create a separation between the living room and other parts of the house by various means.

You can do this with the help of a kitchen island, a staircase, walls, half walls, various furniture.

10. In a large living room, intimacy can be created by designing two different seating areas:

This is what we did in this living room in a penthouse apartment in Herzliya.
